This weekend, Wycombe Abbey Hangzhou (WASHZ) hosted 54 U11 and U13 pupils from Wycombe Abbey Changzhou (WASCZ) in the first collaborative sports tournament between the Wycombe Abbey Schools. WASHZ opened its doors in September 2021 and the pupils have been busy learning team sports and it was incredible to see 136 boys and girls playing competitive sport with the boys learning contact rugby and the girls learning netball....
The return from the Golden Week Holiday also saw the return of the Blue Fountain Book Fair to our school. The Book Fair comes bringing the newest and best English books to our school for pupils and staff to peruse and purchase for their own collections....

On Saturday 16th October, the school welcomed Jiangsu Province U13/U16 & U18’s to Wycombe Abbey School, Changzhou for what was an extremely enjoyable, wet and cold afternoon of rugby. With the conditions more synonymous of rugby being played in the North of England, it was a wonderful learning opportunity for all involved and gave them further exposure to the beautiful game of rugby....

It has been a fantastic start to the new term for the World Scholars Cup club at WASCZ. The expansion of the extra curricula activity has meant that we can now offer it to student from years 9-13 and the uptake has been incredible. Over forty students have enrolled, and all are looking forward to attending their first competition. We have further expanded the club to include the National High School Debate League of China and we are looking forward to taking teams to an event in Shanghai this term where they will take part in Public Forum competitive debating....

In recent months, the Art Department here at Wycombe Abbey Changzhou has been introducing pupils to a new medium, Clay. Our budding potters in Y7, Y9 and Y10 have thoroughly enjoyed using clay to mold and shape forms using just their hands and some basic tools in our ECA Pottery lessons. The Art Department firmly believes in encouraging the self-expression of our budding artists, and by introducing this new medium, seeks to continue to do so....

This summer I am delighted to take the two teams of girls who were so successful at the World Scholars Cup regional round to the global round in Shanghai....
After an early morning meet, the Wycombe Abbey Rugby teams boarded a coach bound to Shanghai for what was a highly anticipated rugby fixture against Shanghai American School Puxi, the first external rugby event in over 18 months. The school fielded three teams, Senior Boys’, Senior Girls’ and an U15 Boys’ squad, who have all been consistently training every week despite the lack of fixtures. The excitement of the pupils on the journey to Shanghai was tangible, and as we arrived at SAS, the teams took great pride in donning their school jerseys and taking to the field....

Football has become an increasingly popular sport here at Wycombe Abbey, with the programme being revitalized with the arrival of our new football coach in October 2020. Since then, the school has been encouraging pupils to be part of the football ECA, weekend trainings, house competitions and external fixtures....
After over 2 years development, the percussion faculty at WASCZ has developed from drum kit lessons to multiple instruments including orchestral percussion, percussion ensemble and other ECA lessons. In order to support the development of the percussion programme, we have upgraded our instruments from 2 drum kits to multiple percussion instruments, including drum kits, marimbas, timpanis, snare drums, xylophones, vibraphones, djembes, crash cymbals and more! Our percussionists demonstrated their skills on these various instruments during their unique performances at the Spring Concert on 29th April....
Welcome to the next addition in Wycombe Abbey School’s Secondary Artwork of the week. This week we are showcasing the idea of ‘artist’s research’ and art history in our work. One of our senior ECAs is Art History, led by our Head of Art. The ECA builds on the work of IGCSE and A Level classes and allows pupils to add depth and breadth to their knowledge of artists and the history of art. In their applications to universities, our artists are able to demonstrate a great understanding of artistic endeavour through place and time and reflect on this in their own work. On 23rd April, in order to provide our musicians with a deeper study experience, music department invited Duo Ping Ting, the founders of the HongKong Piano Duo Association, to give our young musicians a duo master class for the musicians who performed in the Spring Concert....
Recently the WASCZ theatre was brought to life with the sound of performance, with the Music Department hosting the much-anticipated Spring Concert, which featured 14 different ensemble performances and around 130 pupils showcasing their ability....

As a part of our various ECA offerings at WASCZ, the Introduction to Robotics and Coding ECA seeks to develop the junior pupils’ understanding of challenges and ability to problem solve within the field of STEM. This area of curriculum is of great global importance, with countries all over the world promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, which form the backbone of our modern society....
Making sure our pupils have the chance to experiment with diverse media is one of the ways that our Art Department support pupils in creating portfolios that receive excellent IGCSE and A Level grades and gain admission to top universities. Universities are looking for artists who can use materials to tell the stories that they want to tell, about the subjects they are concerned with. Our Art Department provides full support for pupil’s portfolios as part of the school’s universities admissions service. Pupils spend hours of extra time with our Art teachers to make sure they have the very best portfolio. This week’s artwork of the week showcases all those skills....

On Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of May, the Wycombe Abbey Changzhou Fencing team travelled to Xinbei to take part in a competition, in which they saw great team and individual success. All the pupils, from Years 7 to 10, practiced the Epee style in their bouts, a form of fencing in which allows for the whole body to be a valid target for strikes made with the tip of the epee sword....
We boarded the bus at 8. 45 and set off for Dongshan, near Suzhou. When we arrived, the students were all in good spirits and excited for the hike. It was a hot day so we ensured everyone had lots of water and sunscream before setting off up the mountain. It was a challenging but beautiful hike over the hills and through an orchard. It lasted about three hours before we arrived to the campsite. The students then had an opportunity to relax and play some games before a lesson in cooking outdoors. At about 9 pm, the rain started but all the students were in their tents and keeping dry....
On Wednesday morning, pupils in Year 9 started a 3 day trip to Nanshan, and pupils in Year 10 and PreAY started a 3 day trip to Maoshan, both about an hour away from WASCZ, where the pupils took part in adventurous outdoor activities, part of the holistic education offered at WASCZ....

Saturday 24th April began with an early start for the members of the Wycombe Abbey School Changzhou running club, with 21 students and 3 staff travelling to Suzhou Singapore International school (SSIS) for our first track and field competition of the year. After a light breakfast and a quick team photo the team warmed up together, preparing for the busy day ahead. In total the team competed in 6 track events, running from 9:30 am until 1:30 pm. These everts were 100m, 200m and 400m sprints and 4x100m relay followed by the longer distance races of 800m and 1500m run....
Ready to enjoy an afternoon of football in the bright April sunshine, last Saturday 25th the boys’ houses took to the sports field to take part in the House Football competition and to compete for the House Football trophy. All houses fielded a squad made up of one player from each year, Y8-Seniors, to compete in a round robin of 6-a-side games, each lasting 10 minutes....
On Friday April 16th , pupils in Grade 4 were treated to a unique lesson on the Moon, taught by two talented Year 9 pupils who volunteered their time to prepare and deliver an engaging and informative lesson....

In addition to achieving outstanding examination results, and sporting, musical and artistic success, we also support the pupils in getting internationally recognised awards celebrating their achievements outside the classroom. One of these awards is the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DofE). We are delighted to announce that some of our Sixth Form pupils have recently completed working towards the award and have been given their certificates and pins. Everyone in the school community is proud of their achievements, well done to the pupils!...
On Saturday 17th April to the excitement of the students, we held a House Floorball Competition for the girls’ houses. The day took the format of a round robin competition, with each house given the opportunity to play all other houses. As a way of strengthening friendships and house camaraderie the teams consisted of members of all year groups (2x Y7/8, 2xY9/10, 2x Senior and 1x any grade), competing in games that lasted 7 minutes....

As part of our ECA program at Wycombe Abbey Changzhou, some of the students have been participating in the Lego Engineering ECA, learning how to program robots and apply what they have learnt to find solutions to real world problems....

On Saturday 13th March, the WASCZ Music Department took the Y13 A-level pupils along with a selection of our most advanced musicians to the Yamaha Concert Hall in Xinbei to take part in a Chamber Recital Concert. The concert showcased the musical talent of the school, as well as the Y13 pupils’ A-Level recitals, which contribute to 30% of their overall A-Level grade....

On Saturday, all students took part in a 1km Fun Run House competition, running a route around the school campus. Supported by the beautiful spring weather, the cheering of their peers and music from the stands, the students made their way around the route in good time, all a credit to their house for trying their very best; a fun occasion with the opportunity for the more competitive runners to test their speed and endurance....
On Saturday 13th March, WAS fielded an U19 and an U15 team to compete at BIS Wuxi in a friendly competition against Wuxi International School and Boston International School Wuxi. As the first external football fixtures of the academic year, the students were incredibly excited to be playing and representing their school on the football pitch once again....

Having enjoyed immense success at the Ningbo Regional round of the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC), this ECA has become a student favourite. Aiming to provide students with a richer understanding of current affairs through working towards competing in the WSC competitions, The WSC program is highly competitive and requires students to master an extensive advanced curriculum centered on a theme, for this year the theme was ‘A World Renewed’....

Academic Colours are a type of award given to pupils at prestigious boarding schools in the UK and we think it is right that pupils at our school should have the opportunity to get the award for their academic success too....

Over the Spring Festival holiday, the Y7 students were given the task of making musical instruments purely out of recycled materials. As pollution becomes an increasingly more critical issue in today’s global society, this project allowed for the way that we as consumers perceive waste to be challenged, as well as showing that music can always be found, even in the most unlikely of places!...
On the 6th March 2021, Wycombe Abbey held its annual science fair for Year 9 and 10 pupils. The aim of the science fair is to familiarize pupils with the scientific process and for them to gain some hands-on experience in problem solving, working as a team and developing scientific practical skills....
A number of Year 7 and 8 pupils were awarded Academic Colours in their year assembly last week. As in many top UK schools, these badges recognise those pupils who have achieved the most success across all of their subjects. Only a small number are awarded each year, and competition was fierce to obtain this prestigious honor....

The history of Chinese clothing begins when, to quote, the "Yellow Emperor let down his clothes and ruled the world". After inheriting the etiquette and laws of the Zhou Dynasty, the clothing system spread to the people in the Han Dynasty. The clothing system has been passed down for more than 4,000 years and is one of the oldest national costumes in the world....

On Saturday January 16th the boys' houses donned their swimming costumes, goggles, and headed to the pool to take part in the WASCZ Boys Swimming Competition. With all boys in the swimming centre, the atmosphere was electrifying, with pupils and staff cheering on competitors. The afternoon was split into six categories, designed to showcase the different swimming styles learnt by pupils in lessons: Breaststroke, Freestyle, Backcrawl, Relay, Board Relay and Search & Rescue, with pupils competing against respective age groups. Although the competition was tightly fought it was Elgar house who took the title of Overall Champions, with S. Hu of Elgar setting three new school records in the Seniors 50m Breaststroke, Freestyle and Backstroke! At the end of the event the leaderboard read as follows:...
On Saturday Jan 16th, the girls' houses took to the AstroTurf to compete in the WASCZ Girls' Football Competition. Each house entered two teams, playing in a Round Robin 7 a side format. With football greatly enjoyed by many girls at school, the matches were fiercely competitive with players on all teams vying for the title of overall Champions, with many games tight until the final whistle! As our Sixth Form pupils commence their January A Level examinations this week, we are delighted to share the outstanding offers that our Upper Sixth have received from world-class universities around the World. We are also delighted to announce that five of our pupils have undertaken their Oxbridge Interviews in recent weeks, demonstrating their academic abilities and we look forward to hearing the results of these interviews in the near future....
The Senior Rowing Team came from all over China during the Christmas holiday, to race at the Shanghai Chinese and Foreign Enterprise Regatta on Sunday 27th December 2020....
House Unison 2020 took place on the 11th December and was the biggest the school has ever seen, involving over 700 pupils. This year's theme was songs from the West End and Broadway and a great variety of songs were selected from old Classics to modern hits. The Houses sang, danced and acted in an attempt to win the favour of this year's judges....
For the final day skiing, we had the best weather. The sun was out and it was the warmest that it had been. Many pupils headed to the top of the mountain to enjoy the view and take a few pictures before the taking their final ski lessons....

The skies were clear and the sun out for our third day of skiing. The pupils have made such good progress during their ski lessons; many ventured to the top of the mountain for more challenging slopes and conditions. At the top of the mountain, the temperatures were extremely cold and the commitment and courage shown by many pupils has been highly commendable....
The scuba diving pupils have made excellent progress today towards their goals. The pupils learning to dive have been out on a boat jumping into the ocean with all their scuba diving equipment and practicing the scuba skills in order to become qualified scuba divers....
The journey to Yabuli was long but went very smoothly and we were warmly welcomed into hotel with a much needed hot drink. After settling into our rooms, we had a fantastic dinner before preparing for a busy day skiing....

This weekend two teams of year 11 pupils competed in the Senior Division of World Scholar's Cup regional round in Ningbo. L. Xu, A. Xia, J. Zhu, J. Zhou, A. Fan and E. Xu formed two teams to compete in Team Debate, Scholar's Bowl and team and individual writing as well as all pupils taking the individual Scholar's challenge. The WSC program is highly competitive and requires students to master an extensive advanced curriculum centered on a theme, for this year the theme was 'A World Renewed'....

On Sunday November 29th our school held fencing competition. As part of the school's ECA offerings, fencing has always been favored by many pupils in WASCZ. The competition took the format of an individual elimination competition. The competition saw a brilliant display of sportsmanship, with competitors helping each other, respecting the rules, displaying teamwork, fighting spirit and elegance in their martial display....
On Sunday 29th of November to finish off the month pupils were invited to take part in our School Tennis Competition. Taking place in the Dome across the four courts, there were a number of divisions to take in: Y7-9 mixed, Y10-13 mixed and the Women’s Doubles competition....
On Saturday 28th November, the Wycombe Abbey School Changzhou Music Department had the pleasure of publicly showcasing a small selection of their ensembles in a Celebration Concert. Over 100 hundred pupils performed to an audience of 300 in the school's onsite Theatre, with over 2000 people joining online to watch a livestream of the event. The video of this has already been viewed almost 5000 times....
On Saturday the 21st of November, 10 of our top Netball players took part in an interschool Netball competition against Dulwich College Suzhou. It was very exciting for our team as this was the first competition we have had the opportunity to take part in this school year. Girls throughout the year have been working hard on key netball aspects that has helped to develop their knowledge about the game itself, as well as their practical skills on court....

Bright and early on the morning of November 22nd a team of fourteen boys and girls set off to Changzhou Global Harbour to take part in a fencing competition. The day's competition was divided into two parts, consisting of an individual category and a team category. As part of our extra-curricular offerings, fencing is greatly enjoyed by the pupils who consistently train vigorously and passionately; this attitude was clear to see during the competition and was reflected in the results obtained....

The second event in our inter-house sports competition, last Saturday saw the holding of the Netball and Basketball competitions in the Dome and Basketball Court respectively. With both sports passionately loved by the pupils at WASCZ, each event saw an extraordinary competitive spirit in some extremely close and well fought games....
Saturday 17th October, in the beautiful autumn weather, the Sports Department hosted the annual House Rugby Competition. Each house fielded a team of six players consisting of two Y7-8 pupils two Y9-10 and two Seniors, allowing for cross year group friendships and bonds to be strengthened. The atmosphere was electric, and all matches intense, with all teams trying their best not to concede tries, and of course to come out victorious!...

On Saturday 17th October, a group of excited runners set out bright and early to take part in a Cross-Country competition at Boston International School in Wuxi. The team consisted of 10 runners of boys and girls from years 7-10, who competed against athletes from 6 other Jiangsu schools....

In the Music department at WASCZ this week we are celebrating success in our piano faculty. Three of our pupils were entered into the 2nd WPTA Singapore International Piano Competition, which received an overwhelming number of applications from 22 countries. All three of our entrants, Emily Zhou (Y8), Kevin Wang (Y8) and Cici Shi (Y13) received the Silver Award in their respective categories of Junior Talent and Emerging Musicians. The Jury members commented that they were “impressed by their dedication to the arts of pianism as well as the palette of expressions and artistry displayed in their performances!”....
Saturday 12th September saw our annual “Back to School Party” for all pupils both boarding and day scholars. The evening was fired off by a magnificent barbecue in the outer area of the science and PE building that run from 6-8pm and, during that time, saw a constant stream of pupils and teachers queuing up to gather a varied assortment of meat, vegetables, fruits and dainties on offer as well as various soft-drinks. It was wonderful to see the many smiling and excited faces as they walked to their seats with their plates brimming with food ready to chat and laugh with their friends....
As part of WASCZ's commitment to Outdoor Education, this weekend, WASCZ hosted the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award China National Award Office and teachers from 6 schools around China, including from as far away as Chengdu. Delegates took part in Level 2 training. This training means the teachers know how to support pupils take part in the DofE Award, particularly the outdoor education part, called the 'Adventurous Journey'. Adventurous journeys are undertaken by all pupils at WASCZ and conducting them in a safe, educational and fun way is central to our ethos....
As we start the second week of the school year, I took a moment to reflect about the way the school had changed since the arrival of Secondary pupils. It was great to see so many boys and girls walking around the campus with smiles on their faces, happy to be back with their classmates and friends and waving happily at teachers they had missed over the summer....
As the first event in our Saturday Sport series, the Sports Department hosted an inter-house “In it to Win it” competition. Not your average sporting event, the competition consists of several fun challenges and activities for small groups of the pupils to complete, all whilst vying to come out as the overall winners....
With the first week of the new academic year coming to an end, it is important to take a moment to reflect on all that has been happening in this busy time....
As part of our return to school and marking the beginning of the new academic year here at Wycombe Abbey, we held our annual ECA Activity Fair. It is a testament to the school's commitment to extra-curricular learning. Pupils were invited to view presentations that represented all of the ECAs and to meet the teachers who would be running the various activities, all the while being serenaded by our Staff Jazz Band....
The academic year started on Monday 24th August for new and returning teachers....
Though this year has seen difficulties and hardship, our pupils at Wycombe Abbey School Changzhou have achieved the best IGCSE results in the School’s history, with another 100% pass rate in all subjects....
As we come to the conclusion of the ‘Summer Sports Course’, it has been wonderful to reflect on a hugely successful 4 weeks in which children has been exposed to around 15 individual and team-based sports, as well as being taught English daily through a variety of teaching methods....
Wycombe Abbey pupils are celebrating their A Level results and their world-class university destinations, having achieved truly outstanding results....
It was another fun and successful week on the Summer Sports Course with a number of new pupils joining us from both Changzhou and Nanjing. Once again, we added a new selection of sports which included Dodgeball and complex disciplines from Athletics (High Jump and Shot Putt). Numbers for the week were just shy of 60, which enabled staff to provide more 1 to 1 support during both the sporting activities and English classes....
Following the success of the first week, the Summer Sports Course continued to go from strength to strength during the second week. Pupil numbers were still in excess of 75 for the second week and they were treated to an even greater number of sports, which included all those learnt during week 1, with the addition of archery, cricket, rounders and ultimate frisbee....
History has been made this past week with the inaugural sports summer course which has been led by Ben Wood (Deputy Head Pastoral), Sam Thurgood (Housemaster) and ably supported by a strong cohort of the schools sporting staff, including the Headmaster of Wycombe Abbey School, David Griffiths....
As the Summer term drew to a close here at Wycombe Abbey Changzhou, our track, field and swimming pool were in full use as we held the annual Sports Day, an event which bear witness to the strong sporting spirit in our school. With all secondary pupils (and staff!) participating, either as competitors or supporting their fellows, it was a fitting end to our Summer term which encapsulated the ethos of the school....
On Sunday 21st June, pupils in Years 7-13 had a wonderful opportunity to observe a solar eclipse at school. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between the Sun and the Earth, casting a shadow on a portion of the Earth. This impressive celestial event was greatly enjoyed by all involved and fosters interest in science among the pupils....
In June, our Year 11 and Pre-Ax pupils took part in a very successful Sixth Form Induction Week. Pupils participated in a full calendar of activities and lessons that allow them to gain insight into Sixth Form life, as well as preparing them for the step-up from IGCSE to A Levels in September....
On the 19th June, Year 13 pupils and staff were able to celebrate the culmination of their school journey at the annual Graduation Ball....

On Saturday, the end of season rugby dinner and awards took place at Wuyue International Plaza. It was a celebration of another year of progress for both the senior boys and girls teams. It was also a chance to say goodbye to those who will be leaving the school, many of whom will be able to carry on playing rugby at university, after being introduced to the sport at Wycombe Abbey....
Despite the cancellation of the 2020 UK Rugby Tour, we have pressed ahead with arrangements for next year with the U13 Rugby Squad combining with the U15’s. Training on a Wednesday evening and Sunday morning has brought together a group of players with a complete mixture of abilities and experience. Alongside our now veteran members of the two squads, we have been complimented with several new faces who have brought real enthusiasm and excitement to the group....

On the morning of January 16, 2020, Liu Yajuan, the director of the Star Public Welfare Foundation, and Chai Jianming, the head of local council made a special trip to Wycombe Abbey School Changzhou to give us a pennant to thank our teachers and pupils for their support for charity.
