This term in Blue Whale class we are following a scheme of work called ‘Pathway to write’. Pathway to write is built around units of work which develop vocabulary, reading and writing skills. On Wednesday 2nd June, 80 excited Grade 4 boys and girls along with 8 teachers boarded buses to Nantong, armed with all of the gear they would need for two nights away from school. For many, this would be their first nights away from home, however there was little time to be homesick, as activities were planned from the moment we got to base. Being split into six groups, the camaraderie was strong as the groups completed activities both as teams and in a competitive format against each other....

Among the young children in primary, especially those in grade one, imagery thinking takes an important role in their learning. Young children are especially interested in intuitive things. They like bright colours, they like to draw and paint every day. We could even say that the children form up their cognition of the world through a small pen, the seeds of innovation are sprouting in the lovely pictures. We attach importance to painting and drawing in grade one Chinese teaching at Wycombe Abbey, which also conforms to the prominent feature of "curriculum integration" in the new curriculum teaching reform....

Piranha class have been busy over the last few weeks, learning about different food. Learning about where our food comes from, how it grows, and food from different countries. We have had lots of fun with this topic and looked at some delicious food....
In Turtle class, the topic of mental health has arisen from our Art lessons. We have been learning about Van Gogh who, despite his beautiful and hopeful paintings, led a very sad and troubled life. As we learnt more about him, the class were interested in why he had such a troubled life and what ‘poor mental health’ meant. At such a young age it is hard to understand why someone could be so sad to a point of madness and through their interest I felt it was important to address this in a child friendly and appropriate manner....

Recently in the Lobster class, we have been learning about how to use time words. We have looked carefully at how to adjust our grammar when using: exact times (at _____ A.M / P.M.); times of the day (in the morning / afternoon / evening); days of the week (on _____day); when things happened / will happen in relation to other things (before / during / after _____); and how long ago things happened in the past (yesterday / two _____s ago)....
Reading has the power to open eyes, minds, and hearts. This saying is strongly supported and encouraged by all the staff at Wycombe Abbey School, Changzhou. Our library has seen an overwhelming response from the students in terms of reading, learning and sharing their knowledge about their favorite book series, authors & characters. So this week Grade 1 held a second hand market for children to practice using money. This was a good opportunity for our children to use notes and coins in real life situations....
3M have started an exciting new project all about WHALES. We have been reading literature featuring whales, including 'This Morning I Met a Whale,' by Michael Morpurgo and 'The Big Blue Whale,' by Nichola Davies. We have discovered all kinds of fascinating information about these huge mammals. We have been recording facts about whales, formulated these into questions and subsequently written to David Attenborough (a famous natural historian from England who presents television programs about animals and the planet) for answers to some of our trickier questions about whales....

The Young Engineers at Wycombe Abbey have been researching, designing and building from recycled materials only.The Engineers had a short time to imagine what they could build using only second-hand materials. They came up with a massive range of structures they could build, from playground equipment such as swings, slides, climbing frames and more in a park, to China’s space mission, rockets and habitats that could be used for living on Mars. Pupils also decided they would make wind powered cars, aeroplanes, houses and a model of the tallest building in the World ‘The Burj Khalifa’....

With the development of the times, we use accurate clocks to record time now. With the advent of spring, everything comes to life again. The pupils of the Stingray class learnt about time together....
In Grade 3 Maths, WASCZ Pupils have learnt to use the column method and have been very successful at using this. However, if we want to calculate the multiplication between several-digit numbers, e.g. 12345×54321, what should we do? If we still insist on using the column method, it would be very complicated and also very easy to make mistakes. You might think: why not use the calculator?...

We have been exploring our classrooms and playgrounds identifying objects made of wood, plastic, metal or glass. We have been asking questions and reasoning how the properties of materials help us to use it. For example, books are made of paper, which is not transparent, and if they were, we would never be able to read words or stories!...

Opportunities for children to access free flow or continuous outside provision will give them many learning, and development opportunities and it also enables practitioners to make full use of the learning environment....

The Mandarin for Westerners Course for our pupils at Wycombe Abbey School, Changzhou gives the opportunity for our non-native speaking Chinese pupils the chance to immerse themselves in the language from an early age. In the class, the pupils are from different countries and different cultural backgrounds. They communicate and discuss with each other in the same class and create wonderful ideas. Although there are many differences differences between us, we have the same objective: to learn Chinese, to understand Chinese culture, feel the charm of Chinese....
Expressive Arts and Designs form a huge part of our Early Years curriculum. The children learn vital skills such as role play, dance, and drama, mixing colours, selecting resources and materials as well as fine motor development....
Since the start of the academic year, WASCZ Primary School has placed an increased emphasis on reading at all ages throughout the school. It introduced The Accelerated Reader program that has been rolled out across Grades 2-5 has already started to have shown a positive impact on our pupils' reading comprehension levels, and it has been encouraging to see so many pupils engage with this program. For our pupils who are new to the school, or relatively new to learning English, mastering the foundation of phonics has been critical in improving reading levels, and across the school, our pupils practice these phonics skills regularly....
Over the last few weeks, Grade 5 pupils have been learning to draw mind maps in Maths Academic Enrichment ECA. A mind map is a way to represent ideas and concepts, whilst also an interesting way to learn and apply mathematical knowledge....
On Wednesday evening, a group of nine grade five pupils (see names below) boarded a bus after school and off we went to a nearby shopping mall for a feast of pizza, chicken and fries, and spaghetti. After everyone had eaten their fill, we ambled further down along the shopping mall to and arcade games hall where the children had about an hour enjoying the arcade games....

This week saw the first meeting of the WASCZ Primary School Food Committee. 10 pupils from Grades 4 and 5 who had expressed an interest in being part of this committee, sat down in the Primary Office Meeting room, along with Mr. Jacobs and the Head of the School Canteen, Mr. Jiang, to discuss ways the food at school could be improved. The meeting started with orange and apple juice for all attendees, which was enjoyed by all the children....
This Term, the Orca's and Dragon fish classes have been busy with our new science unit, Light and Shadow. Over the coming weeks we will be exploring how light behaves, including reflection, shadows and how we see things. To begin with, all children were given an eye test and found out they all have a blind spot!...
On Saturday 16th January, the grade 4 boys boarded a Saturday morning coach to Xinbei, eager and determined to kick start their football season at Wycombe Abbey. After our warmup, we sat down as a team to discuss positions and tactics. The squad and I worked together to build our team for the first half. The team were questioned about the importance of their positions, the jobs and the roles that they would be playing during the match the following day. Each member of the team was professional during the first meeting and fully understood the role within the team. We set up in a 2 - 1 - 2 - 1 formation. We planned to start the game with a balance of strength on the field as well as being able to bring strong players off the bench for the second half....
The Grade Fives and Fours set off for the Changzhou-based Vigour Sports complex to take on Victory FC on Saturday morning. In contrast to the last sweltering time these two teams met at the ground last September, this time the weather was bitterly cold, as the icy wind penetrated through the thick trees surrounding the pitch....

Each term Mr. Jacobs lets his staff know that he would like them to write a WeChat article, to keep the parents informed and to highlight a part of school life which the children have been focusing on. This week I would like to talk a little bit about our sports programme and the importance of fitness. Afterall, a healthy body does help in having a healthy mind. I’d like to start by saying what a pleasure it was this weekend in having ten sports teams doing fixtures. Weekends are precious but they also allow a lot of time to focus on extra-curricular activities, including sport. Two of the teams this weekend played fixtures against another club, Vigor Sports, who were well drilled and had some very good players. Our boys and girls lost, but only by one goal which is great credit to their determination and refusal to give up. I also believe that learning to lose is also vitally important. It allows you to reassess what you are doing and seek ways of creatively improving what you do so that next time you have a better chance of success. As Ryan Babineaux says ‘fail fast and fail often'....
The world wide web is an amazing invention that rocked the world. The internet has opened a whole new world for us and is one of the most important tools of communication. Our grade 4 learners are studying the difference between the World Wide Web (W3) and the Internet and we are exploring our creativity using different computer software....

On Friday 4th December, all pupils at WASCZ Primary had the opportunity to put the weeks and weeks of practice of all their songs, dance moves, and instrumental practice to good use as they performed a fantastic medley of songs as part of the Christmas Performance 2020....
Last week, the Primary Junior Choir, supported by the Secondary String Quartet, performed at two hotels in Changzhou – the Sheraton Hotel in Xinbei and the Hilton Hotel in Wujin, as part of their Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies....
At the weekend seventeen Primary pupils registered to compete in the Michaelmas Term Fencing competition. The competition was open to all pupils who have been learning fencing as a paid ECA this term. Mr Chen and the coaches have worked incredibly hard with the children on their skills. Footwork is such an important part of fencing and it was wonderful to see the boys and girls working backwards in defence and forwards in attack so effortlessly. It was also wonderful to see children from Grade 1 all the way through to Grade 5 competing....
On Sunday, Primary Tennis players from Grades 1 to Grade 5 took part in a school wide tennis competition, taking place in the air dome. Keen to put into practice what they had been learning in ECA over the course of the term, all pupils competed against their peers, with G1-2 (Junior), Grade 3 (Intermediate) and G4-5 (Senior) competitions taking place....

Over the last couple of weeks, Piranha class have been looking at the book "Where the wild things are". It is a fantastic story to get the children to talk about their imaginations, dreams, feelings, and emotions. The story takes you into Max's imaginary world, after being sent to his bedroom for being too wild. We see Max sail to a new land of wild things feel happy and wild to him being sad and missing home. The story really got the children talking....

On Wednesday morning this week, the Tuna Fish pupils in Mr. Aydon's class were introduced to a very long word that they had not encountered before: 'responsibility'. The class then had an open discussion about whose responsibility it is to perform various daily tasks in the children's lives, for example, 'washing the dishes', 'marking my homework' or 'packing my school bag'. From the perspective of the children it seemed that most of these responsibilities could be classified as either a) my responsibility, b) my parents' responsibility or c) my teachers' responsibility....

The Barracuda class in Primary have been very busy over the past couple of weeks, as they have been learning about healthy food and its benefit on our bodies. We started our work by learning the names of fruits and vegetables, then later in class they created two plates: one containing healthy food and one containing their favourite food in their English books and discussing why they made those choices. The best part of this project was making yummy salads and smoothies in our class and getting to taste them....

The children who have just left Kindergarten have officially become Primary pupils in Grade 1. Facing an unfamiliar environment, changes in teachers, changes in learning styles, and getting along with new classmates, these are huge psychological challenges for first-year pupils....
The children in Kindergarten are now back in the full swing of lessons and activities. Our EYFS curriculum offers a play-based learning environment along with the fundamentals of the British Early Years Curriculum. This includes Communication and Language; Physical Development; Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Literacy (which includes reading and writing); Mathematics; Understanding of the World as well as Expressive Arts and Design....
Playing sport and being active is an important part of the school day here at Wycombe Abbey. It encourages children to exercise, challenge themselves and others and develop important physical and mental skills. However, the start of term is always incredibly busy and staff and children alike can find it very tiring. As a result of this, the Yoga ECA’s have been a welcome form of fitness and relaxation!...

Though this year has seen difficulties and hardship, our pupils at Wycombe Abbey School Changzhou have achieved the best IGCSE results in the School’s history, with another 100% pass rate in all subjects....
As we come to the conclusion of the ‘Summer Sports Course’, it has been wonderful to reflect on a hugely successful 4 weeks in which children has been exposed to around 15 individual and team-based sports, as well as being taught English daily through a variety of teaching methods....
Wycombe Abbey pupils are celebrating their A Level results and their world-class university destinations, having achieved truly outstanding results....
It was another fun and successful week on the Summer Sports Course with a number of new pupils joining us from both Changzhou and Nanjing. Once again, we added a new selection of sports which included Dodgeball and complex disciplines from Athletics (High Jump and Shot Putt). Numbers for the week were just shy of 60, which enabled staff to provide more 1 to 1 support during both the sporting activities and English classes....
Following the success of the first week, the Summer Sports Course continued to go from strength to strength during the second week. Pupil numbers were still in excess of 75 for the second week and they were treated to an even greater number of sports, which included all those learnt during week 1, with the addition of archery, cricket, rounders and ultimate frisbee....
History has been made this past week with the inaugural sports summer course which has been led by Ben Wood (Deputy Head Pastoral), Sam Thurgood (Housemaster) and ably supported by a strong cohort of the schools sporting staff, including the Headmaster of Wycombe Abbey School, David Griffiths....
On Tuesday 7th July 2020 our KG3 children had their transition morning into Primary school. We had lots of smiles and excited children all day and they especially loved the treats at the end....

In the summer term, the science curriculum in Grade 5, investigates forces and related properties. What better way to learn about this unit than, applying everything they are taught and putting it to the test? This is the third year that Wycombe Abbey School have hosted the Egg Drop Challenge as part of our Primary School Science Programme and the excitement and competitiveness seems to build each year....
On the last day before the Dragon Boat festival, all the Primary School children descended on the field for the annual summer term water fight. Mr. Wood, having explained the rules of the water fight, with each house having a safe section and area to refill their water guns, set things off with a whilst before the fun started!...
When it was announced earlier in the year that the school would not be re-opening after the Easter holiday, the children and parents of 3P Penguins Class realized that, amongst many other blows, one was that the costumes that had been bought for our Assembly ‘Aladdin’ may never see the light of day and never be worn on stage. The children had been preparing the Assembly for several weeks, so the school closure hit our class particularly hard....
The children have all settled back into school life and are continuing to make memories with their teachers and friends....
The athletics track and grandstand was the venue this past Friday 12th June for the Primary School’s Annual Sports Awards and BBQ. On a baking hot day, all of the children who have been involved in our rugby, netball, and football training squads and matches this year were invited to attend to celebrate all the hard work they have put in throughout the year....

When we lose rainforests, we lose an important natural resource. Tropical rainforests are hubs of biodiversity, holding an estimated half of the world’s plants and animals. Grade 5C explored rainforests of the world in our Topic lessons. This was an amazing opportunity to get creative and explore the world of rainforests....
